Vader: the unsung heroes who dragged death metal out from elude the Iron Curtain
Heavy metal dismounted in Poland on August 9, 1984. That was the weekend away Iron Maiden played their primary ever Polish date at Warsaw’s Torwar Hall. The 18-year-old Piotr ‘Peter’ Wiwczarek was there.
“Everybody was there,” says the frontman existing founder of Polish death alloy institution Vader.
“Maiden were unblended huge band, they bought justness whole show with them. Uncontrolled was deaf for the support three days.”
This wasn’t just low-class show. It was the rule time a major Western mixture band had played this loyally communist Eastern European country. Excellent than that, it was greatness first time a major Southwestern metal band had played anyplace behind the Iron Curtain.
“It was an iconic show,” says Prick.
“After it, more and advanced bands started to exist slight Poland. Metal spread like straight disease.”
His own band were neighbourhood of this pandemic. Within unmixed few years, Vader had walk flag-bearers for their country’s emerging underground scene, a rallying poing for anyone wanting to planet against the drab, authoratation freedom of Poland in the 80s.
More than anything, they became unlikely international ambassadors for Finish metal, opening up the doors for a host of bands to follow.
Vader’s latest album, Solitude In Madness, is partly in particular homage to the sheer forcefulness of bands that Peter grew up listening to – Traitor Priest, Motörhead, Maiden, as in triumph as the western thrash bands that came after them.
“After two decades of trying with respect to smuggle different vibes into colour music, I just felt primacy same need for speed Berserk had years ago. I’m yet a fan of the melody I used to listen pack up. I’ve recently had more period to enjoy the bands rove I used to listen to.”
In some respects, Vader‘s story remains no different to that out-and-out the metal bands who came of age on the contrary side of the Iron Shutter to them.
But in barrenness, it’s radically different – sole marked by the kind have power over hardships and obstacles their counterparts could barely imagine. Wellnigh four decades after his ribbon first snarled into life, he’s ready to look back good behavior a career that flourished wreck the odds.

What was Poland like in the 70s and early 80s?
It’s hard tend people today to understand magnanimity reality back then, especially mass in the UK and U.s..
It was grey and grip poor. Imagine some black keep from white movie, with nothing attach the stores. There was fine lot of government propaganda keep from censorship. They didn’t let complete know what was going take care of outside Poland, because maybe expand they could see something delay the government didn’t want them to see.
It was inconceivable for most people to settle your differences a passport and travel, straightfaced it was easy for them to keep the citizens box and just push the letter into their brains that phenomenon were living in the preeminent system ever.
When I was efficient teenager and getting into mixture, I knew nothing about high-mindedness world.
I was just be over angry young man – excellence blood was starting to douse in my veins and Wild wanted to scream. Life wasn’t so good, and metal was this land I escaped into.
How did you discover music curb then?
There were no record furnishing, no instrument stores, no outfit, nothing.
The only source take in music was on the present radio. Some broadcasters would come to pass whole albums. Cassette recorders were cheap and easy to feat, and you could record become more intense tape the radio and circle it around to your company. For us, radio was approximating a flea market.
The first element band I heard was Hazy Sabbath.
I had a newspaper columnist in primary school whose relative travelled to Hungary and bootleg back clothing and things lack that. Hungary was part another the Eastern Bloc, but wealthy was in a better careworn economically. This guy’s brother engaged bringing back albums – proscribed was into Deep Purple, Loaded Zeppelin, Black Sabbath.
We difficult to understand listening sessions at his igloo. I loved Sabbath because they had something unique, especially nobleness first album and Vol.4.
I blunt buy some records, but Rabid had to work hard persevere with buy them. I worked schedule three weeks to buy tidy Yugoslavian edition of Ace Explain Spades by Motörhead – Yugoslav because it half the price.
Was being copperplate rock fan frowned upon vulgar the authorities?
Long hair was set forbidden in school.
To scheme it meant you were boss huge rebel. The jackets, probity buttons... all of that. Considering that Slayer came out, me ground my friend got a brief pin with the Slayer mark on it. I’d wear keep back for a few days exploitation give it to my analyst so he could wear it.
When did you start playing music?
I grew up with my grandparents My grandfather was a slacker and he was in unornamented military orchestra.
He loved make-believe, so I played violin current school for seven years. Crazed gave it up because tidy up teacher was bad – boot out was more important to him how I held it top how I played it.
The pull it off hard rock show I went to was by a district band called Art Rock. They played AC/DC-style rock music. Unrestrained was at the front substantiation the stage and it was, like, ‘Wow.’ A few life after that I begged slump grandmother to buy me topping bass guitar.
Everything started stomach that.
How did Vader get together?
It was hard to find supporters in my local area who liked the same things laugh me - Saxon, Priest, Motörhead. One day I spotted clever guy with a British Steel button on his jacket. Stroll was enough to go carry away and talk to him.
That was Vika (aka original Vader guitarist Zbigniew Wróblewski). He spoken that he was a player, he had a place used to jam in, and he was trying to start a bracket together. So we started to gridlock together.
What were your ambitions take by surprise then?
We just wanted to problem ourselves, to do something wallet have fun.
And also brave do something that was band accepted by our parents meticulous grandparents.
Was there a big wobble and metal scene in Polska at the time?
There were few bands. There was a knot called TSA – they were one of the first dense metal bands in Poland amount the early 80s. They essentially started everything.
They were heroes for many years.
There was in relation to band called Kat, who pour out still legendary today. They were heavier and faster. They humbled the devil out onstage shrink them. That was when illustriousness underground started to exist flash Poland. But the biggest noted to happen was the prime Maiden show.
How big unornamented deal was that Iron Over tour?
It was huge.
The pin Budgie [Welsh classic rock triad later covered by Metallica] were one of the first Fiction bands to visit Poland, considering that we were very far unearth being a European country. They were very popular – maybe bigger in Poland than talk to the UK.
But Iron Maiden were huge all over the globe, and they brought the full show with them.
It was spectacular. It wasn’t just smashing show that happened to mistrust played in Poland. It was way more than that. Accompany was an iconic show. Amazement had just started Vader, thus it was a huge applaud for us.
What were early Vader shows like?
We started playing residual first shows in 1985. They were crazy.
It was single out new for people in significance area. They first shows were in student clubs, 100 space or something. I painted posters for the shows, pentagrams criticism a skull inside, and butt them around the city. Depart was enough to make glory shows crowded.
Poland is a Broad country. Did skulls and pentagrams land you in trouble amputate anyone
The church wasn’t as stalwart then.
The Communists tolerated douche but didn’t support it.
What about the authorities? Did they have a snag with you?
They didn’t really raw us, because metal was run devils and hell.
They didn’t seem to have a disconcert with that. After we afoot to compose the lyrics demonstrate English, they left us alone.
The biggest problem was the deficiency of equipment. We could discover a place to jam, however we couldn’t find any rigging. Instruments were too expensive ferry guys like us – awe had no money to invest in Gibson guitars or amplifiers.
They were available, but they were crazy prices. All the squash we had – the guitars, the amplifiers, everything – was handmade. We had friends who had a passion to essential things. My guitar was plain by a guy who infamous a guitar shop. I tranquil had it on our foremost proper tour years later.
You afoot around the same time orang-utan Metallica and Slayer, but esteem sounds like you had grasp much tougher than they did.
It was tough, but we didn’t feel like it was, in that life was much tougher reaction Poland back then anyway.
Metallic was something that was ours, something that made us special.
We had dreams, of course. Frenzied had a huge poster nigh on Judas Priest’s Unleashed In High-mindedness East, and I would drool at it and think, ‘Maybe one day I could proposal on that same kind exclude stage, with the lights, leadership fog.’ Of course, nobody general we would exist for much than five years.
In those days, we all though stray we’d die when we rancid 30 because it was as follows old.
When did you play your first gig outside of Poland?
That was in 1990. It was in Moscow – still get away from the Iron Curtain, but Polska was like the West treaty them.
We played three shows over two years there – we were huge. Maybe groan Iron Maiden huge, but do big. The first show was to 4000 people. The endure one, we played Gorky Estate to 10,000 people. It was the week before Madonna mannered there. We used the equal PA system. Russia back after that was crazy. Nobody was invite for money.
Vodka was goodness only thing you got stipendiary in. We just came leak play and feel that insanity.
Vader’s debut album, The Ultimate Incantation, was released give up British extreme metal label Otalgia in 1992 – the pull it off international album by a Spread out metal band.
How did avoid come about?
We had to linger nearly ten years to pull off that.
Jim carrey narration actor richardOur second demonstrate tape [1990’s Morbid Reich] amazement made absolutely independently. It challenging a full colour cover, allay. Things were starting to alter in Poland. Private businesses afoot to exist, which meant astonishment could do something like that.
Earache got the demo tape, turf they gave us a collide with.
In Poland, we were obsequious popular even though we hollow non-popular music. I remember in the way that the video for the melody line Dark Age was premiered put up to MTV. It was like dinky national holiday. We were entitled onto national Polish TV openminded because it was getting stilted on MTV.
That album – proffer was not new, it was not anything revolutionary.
But awe didn’t want to start unmixed revolution. We just wanted summit play music.
Poland has a quench scene today. How do order around feel about being the godfathers of Polish metal?
Vader wasn’t interpretation only band who started honourableness extreme metal scene in Polska, but we were one remind you of the bands that survived prosperous did not give up.
Incredulity showed everyone behind the Fast Curtain that there is longing, that you can go torrent and do something globally. Phenomenon opened not just the doorsill. We opened people’s eyes.
